You are God

The following was written on August 23, 2019, about a month after life changes hit us like a ton of bricks. During the trials, God had me on a path of reading that was used greatly in my life to bring comfort in days of confusion and pain. Like the manna in the wilderness, the words of comfort and encouragement that he gave lasted but a day (or less), as He had me going back to the well often!

Today I was reading in Isaiah 45. Some observations.
  • Cyrus is a king mentioned more than 30 times in the Bible and is identified as Cyrus the Great (also Cyrus II or Cyrus the Elder) who reigned over Persia between 539—530 BC. This pagan king is important in Jewish history because it was under his rule that Jews were first allowed to return to Israel after 70 years of captivity.
  • In one of the most amazing prophecies of the Bible, Isaiah predicts Cyrus’ decree to free the Jews. One hundred fifty years before Cyrus lived, the prophet calls him by name and gives details of Cyrus’ benevolence to the Jews: “This is what the Lord says to his anointed, to Cyrus, whose right hand I take hold of to subdue nations before him . . . ‘I summon you by name and bestow on you a title of honor, though you do not acknowledge me’” (45:1).
  • Exercising His sovereignty over all nations, God says of Cyrus, “He is my shepherd and will accomplish all that I please” (which I read yesterday in 44:28).
  • This whole section of Isaiah is stressing God’s uniqueness in power and uniqueness in person (none like him); that he stands alone.
    • There is no one like him
    • He alone is God
    • He is the only creator and savior
    • There is no one that can even be compared to him
    • All he is doing, is so that the whole earth recognizes him as Lord, the God of Israel
  • 45:5 I am the Lord, and there is no other; Besides me there is no God. I will gird you (Cyrus) though you have not known me, so that men may know from the rising to the setting of the sun that there is no one besides me!
  • 45:6-7 I am the Lord and there is no other, the One forming light and creating darkness, causing well-being and creating calamity; I am the Lord who does all these.
  • From Cyrus’ perspective, he had all authority and could accomplish all things. He did not yet know the Master Innovator who can reverse any situation and honor any person as an instrument in accomplishing His larger plan—to restore His people.
  • God blessed Cyrus with wealth so that it would be easy for him to help God’s people. God exercised authority over the economy to create a new spiritual economy. Cyrus may have pointed to his achievements, but God had enabled them all.
  • As God created the circumstances for Cyrus to succeed—and for His people to be blessed—He also showed the Israelites His perspective on failure and success.
  • In His power and compassion, He could work in difficult and unexpected ways to bring about their redemption, despite their many failures. The Israelites may have gotten themselves into a horrible situation, but God could make a way to get them out.
Yes Lord. I hear you loud and clear…
Times are hard right now. You are God.
Life is in turmoil right now. You are God.
I have no idea what we are suppose to do next. You are God.
I am lost in what you are accomplishing through this mess. You are God.
I can’t even make simple decisions, how am I to know where you are leading? You are God.
Despair. Failure. Guilt. Unexpected, total life change. You are God.
The days are dark, I lack hope. You are God.
You are God. Sovereign. You know all things, use all things, and hold all things together.
You, as God, have every right to work in mysterious ways. Your ways are beyond our ways, and you have just made that unmistakably obvious!
You are unique. Set apart. Independent from your creation.
Your ways may baffle me (and they do), but that does not discount the truth that you are good and you are at work in the best way possible to make yourself known.
There is no lasso big enough to reign you in!

  1. “I have no idea what we are suppose to do next. You are God.
I am lost in what you are accomplishing through this mess. You are God.
I can’t even make simple decisions, how am I to know where you are leading? You are God.”

These are the three that speak to me most.

I feel like, somehow, God is clearly leading me down a path and at the same time, he’s leaving me entirely in the dark as to whether I’m going the right way. Exercise in faith, I suppose? It’s frustrating and scary.

    But, He is God.

    • Believe God, even in the dark, this does seem to be the place exactly where God wants us. I am learning that when we believe God this way (like Job did), we show the world our love for God and his worthiness of our love….it is a true love rather than a love just when we get things. The world needs to see this kind of love, and as he walks with us through the valleys it proves our love and his worthiness. Keep pressing on, and knowing that God’s grace is daily, manna provided for today as we walk with him.
